Printer Revolution

Those of you who have come from an office environment introduction to computers will remember that following the clattering dot matrix printers we were pleased to receive the Laser Printer.

Let us just remind ourselves about the advantages we first found with Laser Printers.

They were Quick, Quiet and high quality.

None of this has changed, but the price has. The Samsung above is now available for as little £39. For that you get a very useful printer. When turned on it takes about 1 minute before it is ready for the first off. After that it churns out copy at about 16 pages per minute.

Who should consider one? Well I am quite a heavy printer user and I do print quite a lot of graphics, however I also print a lot of text and in the main it does not need colour.

So now I spool text to the Laser and Graphics and Photos to one of the Ink Jets.

Last month’s outer pages of the Newsletter were printed on the Samsung. The print run was completed in about ten minutes, both sides. Using the Desk Jet it normally takes about 90 minutes including turning and printing on the back side.

This month I am going to attempt to print the text on the Samsung and over print the pictures on the Desk Jet and see how long it takes. If you are reading this in Black and White, I failed.

One word of warning, the Toner Cartridge which does about 4,000 pages is about £55. Note that, like Ink Jets, Laser printers are cheaper than the refill cartridge. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it is cheaper to dispose of the complete printer and buy new each time. The new one is delivered with a special cartridge which only does about 2,000 pages. Digital Photography Competition

Remember we are looking for original work using exclusively digital cameras this year.

You should indicate with your entry, the details of your camera as follows. Manufacturer, Model, Resolution. Optionally Shutter speed and exposure. Details of Printer and Paper would also be helpful to other members.

Where you have used imaging software to manipulate your image, we would like to know what package was used and the specification of the original images. In this classification only, you may use digitised images from other sources to mix with your own. You must however declare where your additional image came from. Examples, Newsprint, Internet, Conventional Photograph or captured video image. Again this type of material can only be used to compliment your own digital work. Scanned images or mixtures without the inclusion of your own digital images from a digital camera are not allowed.

Categories are:

Portrait, Landscape, Seascape, Children, Animals and nature,
Digital Art effects. Digital Image manipulation.

In all cases please include the details. One of the objectives is to enable other members to see what can be achieved and how. To see the relative performance of one camera or printer or paper over another.

The original work must have been taken in the past 24 months but not be last years entry. Added images can be of any age.

Use your imagination and skill to help expand all of our knowledge.

Perhaps even help someone to select the Christmas Present that suits them.

Last year we saw a very good standard so let us try and improve in both entries and quality, Imagination and skill.

We look forward to your entries.
