Windows Security Warning

A vulnerability has been discovered in Microsoft Windows that allows hackers to remotely access PCs and install malware through an imaging-handling technology in the operating system.
Microsoft acknowledged the release of exploit code that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code when someone visits a Web site that contains a specially crafted Windows Metafile (WMF) image. Security authority Secunia labelled the vulnerability "extremely critical."

People who use Windows are advised to be wary when opening e-mail and links in e-mail from sources they don't trust. They should not save, open or preview image files from unfamiliar sources. And, as always, people are encouraged to update the patches for their operating systems.

On Thursday, Microsoft issued its patch for the serious WMF file format flaw that has been bedeviling Windows users since the last week of December. The software giant had previously announced that it would not ship the patch to users until next week, when it issues its regularly scheduled monthly patches for January. Why the change of heart? The seriousness of this flaw has been escalating ever since it was first discovered on December 27. At first, the flaw was seen as a minor inconvenience that was unlikely to affect many users. But security researchers quickly discovered that the WMF flaw could be used to direct blistering electronic attacks, and hackers immediately began releasing ever-more-dangerous exploit code.
