Last Month….

As another year drew to a close, last month saw our annual Digital Photo Competition. Once again the standards were very high and gave our competition judge, Arthur Payne plenty to consider during his deliberations.

As usual there were six categories and a good selection of photographs entered in each. As is Arthur’s way he gave each photograph some excellent constructive criticism, pointing out the good features and how each picture maybe improved for competition purposes.

The category winners were :-

Image manipulation
Aircraft vapour trails …Geoff Walsh

Sunrise/Sunset
Evening panorama …Mike Taylor

Black & White Portrait Young man …Geoff Walsh

Nature
Horse Chestnuts …Dave Robb

Pub/Business Sign
Air Hostess …Geoff Walsh

People at work
Portable Grinding …Mike Taylor

The overall winner was me for my picture of the Horse Chestnuts and I am now the proud holder of the Ivor Ruddle Trophy for the next year. Geoff tells me I have to keep it polished – do I have any willing volunteers?

There were fewer entries than normal which was probably due to many reasons, but to make the competition successful we do need your pictures. We know that many of you enjoy and take excellent photographs, so why not share them with us. You may even win. If I can, anyone can. We will be selecting the categories for the next competition early this year to give you plenty of time to get out there snapping. Any feedback you may have regarding the competition and its format would be very welcome.

Our thanks once again to Arthur for giving up his time to judge the competition.

We also had our annual Christmas dinner earlier in the month. 25 members and guests enjoyed a very good meal at the Bowls Club restaurant. Our thanks go to Ben Barretto for organizing the event even though he was unable to make it himself. You missed a good one Ben!

All that remains is to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.

Dave Robb

Minutes of Annual General Meeting 24th January 2007

1. Meeting started at 7.40pm.

2. Apologies received from Derek Kerr, Barry Gilchrist, Chris Fox-Mapletoft and Ben Barretto

3. Minutes of 11th January 2006 were approved as a true record of the meeting.

4. Matters Arising

No Matters arising from above minutes.

5. Chair’s Report

Another good year with some excellent feedback from the members. The presentations were varied and well presented. To keep up the high standards of presentation and an interesting varied programme the committee needed ideas from the members. Larry had enjoyed his first year as club chairman and was looking forward to his next.

6. Secretary’s Report

The committee managed to put on a varied programme that hopefully the membership has enjoyed. Topics ranged through a whole spectrum of computer related themes from how the Internet functioned, printing software and spreadsheets through to photograph judging. Attendances were good with much contribution from the members. The Christmas Dinner was well attended and I am sure all those present had an excellent evening. The programme for 2007 is currently being formulated with about half the year planned. New ideas are welcome as are members willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us. Please contact the committee members with your ideas.

7. Treasurer’s Report

The finance statement shows a small loss on the previous year and this can be explained by renewal of the club Internet domain name and prizes for the photographic competition. It was felt that there was no need to increase subs at the present time. The room rental currently remains the same as last year. A general discussion regarding finances suggested that a few new members would not only invigorate the club but also help with the finances. Geoff Walsh told the members that he had negotiated with local newsagents to put some club meeting date cards in the shop’s computer magazines in an attempt to raise interest in the club. The members agreed that the photographic competion should be more self-funding and the committee agreed to look into ways of doing this.

8. Elections

The following members were elected:

Treasurer – Derek Taylor

Proposed: Keith Allen
Seconded: Barry Beeken

Cttee Members – Geoff Walsh
Derek Kerr

Re-elected unanimously

9. Newsletter & Club Website
Unfortunately the club website has not been kept up to date due to the illness of Chris Fox-Mapletoft, the site manager. We have no idea how long Chris will be unable to maintain the site. In the short term, Barry Beeken agreed to look into keeping the site in order and hopefully it will not be too long before everything is back to normal.

The newsletter continues to be well received and members are happy with the format. Comments like “you always learn something” and “it’s a timely reminder for the next meeting” are gratifying. However we do need articles from members, so please share with us your knowledge and experiences. Mike Taylor has agreed to start compiling a monthly crossword puzzle.

10. Feedback from 2006 topics and ideas for future topics

Problem Solving

Novembers Meeting

A little late but I have finally got round to writing up Novembers meeting. The evening saw Alan giving us a very interesting presentation on Hardware.
It had been some time since we looked at what was new but Alan went back in time a little to about 1990 to show us how things had moved on. He started with a 286 motherboard which had the processor soldered to the board almost needed an extra card for each function.
We then moved to a modern motherboard that comes with a socket for the processor and almost every other function built onto it. You still have the ability to added extra cards if you want, so you could upgrade almost anything.
Alan then talked about future trends which included USB 3.0 , SATA HDD which give much higher data throughput rates than current interfaces. When this is coupled with a RAID interface you can get fast access to your data and the security of a mirrored disk.
