Last Month - Recovering lost data
Larry gave us a very interesting presentation on recovering lost
data. I am sure that at some time we have all deleted files that
we should not have done. With the current versions of windows
you get a second chance to recover most files from the recycle
bin.
The big problem comes when you get a message such as missing operating
system or invalid system disk or in fact any other message that
indicates you cannot access the disk. This could be a Hard drive
or even a memory stick.
If
you find yourself in this situation all is not lost there are
several software packages available that will attempt to recover
your data for you. Larry gave us a demonstration of Get Data Back
which comes in two versions, the first for FAT 32 systems and
the second for NTFS systems.
In order to use all of these packages you must have a second hard
disk to install the software on and space for the recovered files
to be stored. The process is quite time consuming so don’t
expect to be able to do a large hard disk in a few minutes.
Following this Larry gave us an update on the latest free anti-virus
software from AVG . He also gave us a brief overview of Microsoft’s
new anti spyware software which is currently available as a free
beta download, but do read the antispyware warning in the next
article.
