Microsoft security patch brings BSOD misery for XP users
Microsoft’s support forums are being inundated with complaints that its latest security updates are crippling Windows XP machines.
Microsoft recently posted 11 security updates for XP, once they are installed and you carry out the usual reboot that’s when your the problems can start. From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message: “A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.”
Users have narrowed the problem to update KB977165, described by Microsoft as "MS10-015. This patch was intended to address a 17-year-old kernel bug present in all 32-bit versions of Windows.

5.. Chair’s Report

Larry Larsen explained that due to outside commitments he had been unable to be a full participant of the club over the last year and to this end he had decided that he would be standing down as Club President and from the committee. He then went on to record his thanks to all the members for their support during his tenure as President and hoped the club would continue in its current successful fashion. Larry went on to thank the committee for producing a good and varied programme for 2009 and hoped that everyone enjoyed the meetings. Mentioning our 25th Anniversary, he thanked Ben Barretto for organising the Anniversary and Christmas dinners and Geoff Walsh for yet another successful photographic competition. Finally Larry thanked everyone for coming and wished his successor all the best for the future.

6.. Secretary’s Report

Thanks to those who braved the elements in January but due to the adverse weather conditions causing the low turnout we were forced to postpone the AGM until the February meeting. Hopefully the membership enjoyed the programme set for 2009. The committee continues to strive to give as varied a topic list as possible. The year started out with Diane Cave introducing us to the Apple I Phone and explaining some of the reasons why this was the must have device. We looked at the Sony E player which two members currently have and explored ways to back up system data with the powerful Acronis True Image package. The problem solving evening again proved popular and is now becoming a fixture in our calendar. We explored the mysteries of Visual Basic applications in Microsoft Excel with Barry Gilchrist who later in the year introduced to us to the dark arts of the Windows Services software. Steve Orrell introduced us to free desktop
publishing and Alan Danbury showed us how to set up network remote accessing – which still leaves me bewildered! On a lighter note we looked at creating photographic montages and showing how effective and professional they can be made. Peter Simpson showed us some of the features of Microsoft PowerPoint and we completed the year with another successful Photographic Competition. The standard of entry continues to rise and thanks to everyone who entered and made it a fun evening. Well done to Steve Orrell for his overall winning entry and once again our thanks to Geoff Walsh for donating the prizes. 2009 was our 25th anniversary and the club celebrated it with an excellent dinner at the Bowls Club. We also completed the year with our annual Christmas dinner at the same venue. My thanks to Ben for ensuring all went well on both evenings and everyone knew what they had ordered!!!!
New ideas for the programme are always welcome and we will always do our best to accommodate. We also welcome any member who wants to share their knowledge with the rest of us. Please contact the committee members with your ideas and suggestions for future meetings.

7.. Treasurer’s Report

The finance statement shows a profit of £47.79 on the previous year. Derek explained that subs were increased to £15.00 which helped to create a balance of £243.89. He explained that it was necessary to have a fund to cover the cost of replacing the lamp in the club’s projector. He felt that the club was in a financially stable position and membership remains healthy. There had been no increase in room rental although postage is due to go up in April.

8. Elections

The following members were elected:

Secretary – Dave Robb Proposed: Geoff Walsh
Seconded: Derek Taylor

Cttee Members – Alan Danbury Re-elected unanimously
Peter Simpson Re-elected unanimously
David Arkle Proposed: Derek Taylor
Seconded: Geoff Walsh

Thanks were recorded to Larry Larsen who decided to step down as Chair and from the committee this year.

The position of club chair will be considered at the next committee meeting.
9. Newsletter & Club Website

The club website continues to be a medium for the Electronic Newsletter. Articles are sparse and usually originate from the Newsletter. Ideas to improve its content would be readily welcome. Chris Fox-Mapletoft explained that as msn groups were now defunct the private area was now abolished.

The newsletter continues to be well received. The discussion regarding its medium was again considered and members were actively looking at acceptable alternatives to the printed format. Members felt that it was informative and a handy referral to previous presentations and a good reminder for the next meeting. Most of the work creating it is carried out by a minority of people and they could do with some support with more articles. So please come forward to help us out.

Windows to promote random browsers from March 1
Microsoft has revealed that Internet Explorer users will be given a choice of which browser they want to surf the web with from March 1.
The 'web browser choice screen' is part of a proposal by Microsoft to help settle the EU's investigation which followed a complaint filed by the developer of the Opera browser.
Microsoft said Windows 7, XP, Vista users would be offered an automatic download of the browser ballot screen, which provides a choice of five browsers and is currently undergoing internal testing, over the next few weeks.
A limited roll-out externally should have started by now, and expect that a full scale roll-out will begin around March 1, a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. So by the time you read this article the choice of which browser to use should be available.
Microsoft said anyone running Internet Explorer as their default browser would see the screen, which offers more information and links to download Google Chrome,Firefox, Safari and Opera, as well as IE.
Microsoft said the list is presented in random order, in keeping with the company's agreement with the European Commission. Users who get the choice screen will be free to choose any browser or stick with the browser they have, as they prefer.
If you make use of this option why not write us a sort review of your experience
