PC TV.

We have PC TV for some time and now DVB DAB are available as internal or as in my case USB external.

These units are quite expensive, slightly less than £100. However, like the set top boxes they will reduce.

So why bother with one.

Well I don’t think I could justify one just watching the TV programs. However, if you have a DVD writer, you have the means to record TV programmes and Films to Hard disk and then edit and write them to DVD. This is also true of high quality digital radio.

The TV can be operated whilst carrying other simple tasks, like word processing. Graphic editing does cause some intermittent display problems.

There are three display modes in two formats. Wide and normal. You can leave the Window in it’s default with controls on the side panel. Or you can elect to have the entire Window showing you TV Program.

Finally you can elect to have you full screen display showing the TV program.

In this format you have a potentially high quality TV to watch. In my case a 17” LCD flat TV. This would cost me about £250 as a stand alone unit. As part of my PC I have TV, Digital Radio and very sophisticated video recorder.

When you install the software scans the channels and tunes to all available TV and Radio Stations.

In my installation the computer sound connects to a Tehcnics 70W Stereo Amp and speakers so I can really do justice to the quality of sound available.

The only down side is that me “Play Room” is not the best place to relax and view.

The photo shows the full screen display on my ProView LCD monitor.

As yet I have not played with the recording facility. When I have had some experience I will share it with you.

Verdict. Unless you are a gadget freak like me, don’t buy yet. These units are bound to come down in price. Don’t be fooled into buying an analogue version. They do not have much of a future.
