frames—Multi-user, multi-tasking.
? Unix developed mid 1960’s & 1970’s by MIT,
Bell Labs & GE for use on mainframe com-
puters.
? 1970’s/80’s saw Commodore PET, IBM pc’s,
ZX80, etc. All single-user single-tasking.
? 1991 Linus Torvalds created Linux as part of
university project “to prove it could be done”,
based on the style of Unix but to run on
smaller machines.
? Gained popularity from mid-90’s on super-
computers, commercial and industrial appli-
cations.
? Linus Torvalds believes that all software
should be free!!
