         ing.

         5. Chair’s Report
         Barry  Gilchrist  entertained  the  members  with  an  interesting  view  of  the
         world and this year’s topic centred around Size.



         Size  is  everything  and  with  the  aid  of  a  PowerPoint  presentation,  Barry
         demonstrated that  pretty  well everything  is  relative  to  something  else.  For
         example, the Sun is large compared to the Earth, however it pales into insig-
         nificance relative to Alpha Scorpii A, which comes in at around 690 million
         times larger than our Sun by volume.


         The Milky Way galaxy within which, we reside is huge and if you are lucky
         to see it by night, it is only a tiny proportion that is visible to the naked eye.
         However, something much larger further out in the Universe is IC 1011, a
         galaxy that is 6,000,000 light years wide making our Milky Way galaxy just
         a pin prick in comparison. Just how big is the universe?
