ed or because the file system allocated excess space for the file in the first
place). Larger files and greater numbers of files also contribute to frag-
mentation and consequent performance loss.
As time proceeds, users will add more and more data files, so their folders
get much larger. Folders holding your temporary and update files will
grow, causing hard drive access times to increase and slow down your
computer. Just by using the installed Windows software, you can go a
long way to clearing out some of this bulk and make your machine leaner
and meaner.
