As we said earlier, scanners come in various guises, from the flatbed scan-
ners through to the proprietary slide scanner. Becoming more fashionable
now are the multi-function devices which incorporate an inkjet printer with
a scanner. Some of the more expensive models also have a fax system built
in. These devices are cheap and will serve most users. They do not howev-
er, offer slide scanning facilities that some of the stand alone flatbed ma-
chines offer.

These days, most scanners offer the facility to scan to PDF. This effectively
makes the need for OCR software unnecessary. By scanning and creating a
PDF it can be modified or altered simply.
