Points to Note

 There are no hard and fast rules – just be consistent
 Always give your work a title
 Enter a male’s Christian and Surname to show succession
                       Use UPPERCASE for surnames
 Display locations in full if space permits or abbreviate if not, but remember to use
the same abbreviations throughout the family tree
 Include a legend to explain your abbreviations
 Children born to say, John and Mary Smith should be placed under the line that
originates directly beneath the ‘=‘ or ‘x’ sign
 Where possible list siblings in order of age and try and keep generations on the
                        same level

 Include occupations. The abbreviation ‘occ’ need not prefix the occupation
 Mary d is short for Mary, the daughter of. You can also use Mary dau of

 Lines should be unbroken except for a dotted line to indicate uncertain descent and
a wavy or intersected line for illegitimacy.

                       Avoid clutter

Once we have the common standards under our belt, Sue assured us, life would
become easier as the tree grows with the more information being added.
