Points to Note
There are no hard and fast rules – just be consistent
Always give your work a title
Enter a male’s Christian and Surname to show succession
Use UPPERCASE for surnames
Display locations in full if space permits or abbreviate if not, but remember to use
the same abbreviations throughout the family tree
Include a legend to explain your abbreviations
Children born to say, John and Mary Smith should be placed under the line that
originates directly beneath the ‘=‘ or ‘x’ sign
Where possible list siblings in order of age and try and keep generations on the
same level
Include occupations. The abbreviation ‘occ’ need not prefix the occupation
Mary d is short for Mary, the daughter of. You can also use Mary dau of
Lines should be unbroken except for a dotted line to indicate uncertain descent and
a wavy or intersected line for illegitimacy.
Avoid clutter
Once we have the common standards under our belt, Sue assured us, life would
