So, to type something in bold, do I find the mouse and then the menu item
for Bold or do I just type Ctrl B ? Typing Ctrl B seems quicker and it can
toggle Bold on and off.
And during my typing I want to save the current text – just in case Word
‘fails’ – I can type Alt FS or Ctrl S.
And if I want to select some characters, the mouse can get me to the cor-
rect place but I tend to use the shift key and the arrow keys – much more
controllable (at least in my opinion).
Questions and suggestions from the audience further supported Barry's
proposals. There are a wide range of keyboard short cuts for every operat-
ing system and software like Word or LibreOffice Writer, but they need
not be daunting. Several members agreed that they regularly use only 6 to
12 short cuts which will vary according to each persons most used com-
puter programme.
Shortcutworld lists all Word 2013 Short cuts. There are short cut keys for
LibreOffice Writer, and for Mac Office
Additional useful examples are
A Thesaurus, which is useful while writing to search for a word of simi-
lar meaning to avoid repetition. Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer
have a built-in thesaurus To use it highlight the word, & in Microsoft
Word Shift F7, or LibreOffice Writer, Ctrl F7. In Writer F7 on its own
